Nuclear waste train forced through

The CASTOR (Cask for Storage and Transport of Radioactive material) nuclear waste transport from France to Germany was pushed through by thousands of police in the face of widespread protests. Police had to remove thousands of people from the tracks in order for the train to reach its transfer station. The train took 91 hours to reach the waste dump in Gorleben.

As many as 50,000 people took part in trying to block the train.

CATerpillar suspends D9 sales in response to Corrie trial

Caterpillar, the company that supplies the Israeli military with bulldozers used to demolish Palestinian houses, announced that it is delaying the supply of D9 bulldozers during the case brought by the family of Rachel Corrie, who was murdered in March 2003 by an Israeli soldier driving a D9. Rachel was part of an International Solidarity Movement (ISM) group attempting to stop the D9 from demolishing a Palestinian home in the Philadelphia Corridor, a strip separating the Gazan part of the city of Rafah from the Egyptian border. By 2004, Israel had demolished 1,218 houses in the corridor, which was extensively bombed during Israel's assault on Gaza in January 2009.

Rachel Corrie's family have launched a civil suit against the state of Israel over her death. The court, in Haifa, is currently hearing the state's evidence after hearing the family's witnesses earlier this year. The two bulldozer operators unlike the family's witnesses, have given evidence from behind a screen. The Corrie family had requested that they be given dispensation to see the bulldozer driver give evidence, which was refused. The trial is expected to continue into January 2011.

Campaign launched against Shoreham biofuel station

Edgeley Green Power (EGP), a new Hampshire-based company, wants to build a biofuel power station at Fishergate Terminal, Shoreham Port. The power station would burn 50,000 tonnes of biofuels per year. A new campaign has been launched to oppose the plans and highlight the negative impacts of biofuels. Land used for intensive agrofuel production in the global south causes deforestation and severely limits the land available for growing food.
