LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

STAR LETTER: MAMA MIA!

Hello,

Last year I couldn't find a $7 three litre bottle of Bertoli classic olive oil anywhere in the US, when investigating where it had gotten to I found out that it has been bought out by Unilever! I loved Bertoli oil; it has the best taste and is great to cook with as well.

I have heard that Unilever engineered icing elemental proteins from northern fish for its icecream, is this true? can you tell us any more about Unilver and how to find out what products it owns?

Regards,
Linda Milo (by email)

Hi Linda, a good place to start looking is in the belly of the beast (www.unilever.com) which has information on all its brands. Unilever has been accused in the past for: exploiting developing countries, promoting unsustainable agriculture and toxic dumping (see www.corporatewatch.org/?lid=260 for more details). We're not sure about the icecream though!

SHARE THE LOVE FOR SERCO

Thanks for the article about PFI profiteers. But you missed out the fact that Serco are also involved in another "radioactive pie" as part of the privately managed AWE ML (Management Limited) in a consortium with BNFL and US arms giant Lockheed Martin.

AWE ML manages the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Aldermaston - where they make UK nuclear weapons and where (involving PFI) they are building new facilities that will enable UK government to design, test and build a new generation of nuclear weapons.

We've got shares, and are very happy to make them available to others who may have problems with Serco. To attend Serco's AGM see www.aldermaston.net and www.blockthebuilders.org.uk

Thanks, Sian. Also, at the beginning of Setember, Serco were competing for the contract to decommision Sellafield nuclear power plant[1]. They would then be involved in providing management for the full life-cycle of nuclear power by building, managing and then decommisioning.

CORPORATE WATCH IS GOOD FOR YOU!

Dear Corporate Watch

I am an admirer of George Monbiot and was looking at his new website www.turnuptheheat.org recently. After reading about Tescos boss Terry Leahy I found that George recommends you as one of the organisations to link up with.

Just thought you should know!

Vikkie, Falmouth (by email)

ANOTHER WRONG ANSWER, GROMMIT!

Hi there,

Regarding the article from the last newsletter ("It's the wrong answers, Grommit!"), I just wanted to add that although it is small fry in terms of global energy generation, there is a huge problem with incineration of municipal waste being promoted as 'energy recovery' or 'biomass' and therefore “renewable” energy. This has been part of the incinerator industry's attempts to re-brand itself.

The words 'biomass' and 'energy recovery' should be treated with caution - they might mean anaerobic digestion or burning wood waste, or they might just mean a plain old incinerator.

Take care,

Pip (by email)
