SUN, SAND AND CSR November 1, 2006

Oh the joys of travel: sea, sangria and airport luggage retrival. The World Travel Market is in town, London town to be precise. Jennie B sends a postcard.

Are YOU in a company wishing to profit from travel? Then why not come along to the World Travel Market (WTM)!

Promising 'a must attend, business to business exhibition', the WTM is being hosted in the ExCel centre from the 6th until the 9th of November. Managing to sandwich in a day on 'responsible tourism' on Wednesday 8th November.

In 2004, Tourism Concern pointed out the hypocrisy of WTM's day of responsible tourism. This was after it allowed representatives from Burma to promote the country which is ruled by an oppressive military dictatorship.[1]

This year's WTM Responsible Tourism Day features a win-some-shiny-diamonds prize draw. This is in support of the WTM supported 'Just a Drop' charity. Just a Drop states that it is 'the only global travel and tourism industry charity to give children everywhere a right to life'[2]. More CSR BS[3] perhaps? The lack of ethics in diamond mining was reported in the last Corporate Watch newsletter (Diamonds Aren't a Girl's Best Friend). It gets worst. As if this were not 'classy', or just plain wrong, enough; the prize will be presented by the winner of tacky reality TV show Love Island.

Look at the website for more details: www.wtmlondon.com.

P.S. Don't forget the Plane Stupid national day of action against short haul flights on the 6th November. To get involved see: planestupid.com.
