RESISTING THE CORPORATIONS June 9th, 2010

On Tuesday 1st June, the UCU (Universities and Colleges Union) Congress unanimously passed a motion condemning the Middlesex management decision to discipline staff and students, following protests against the closure of the philosophy department.

On Tuesday 1st June, the UCU (Universities and Colleges Union) Congress unanimously passed a motion condemning the Middlesex management decision to discipline staff and students, following protests against the closure of the philosophy department. The motion condemned wider attacks against philosophy in higher education and proposed to urge UCU branches to support the Middlesex branch. This followed a meeting on the previous Friday, where the Middlesex UCU branch decided to demand the immediate reinstatement of postgraduate philosophy courses and go into official dispute with the management if the staff suspensions are not lifted by midday on Wednesday 2nd June.

Since the proposed closure has been announced there have been occupations, workshops and demonstrations organised by the new Save Middlesex Philosophy campaign. The most recent was an occupation on Thursday 27th May at the Hendon campus, where there was a rally attended by around 200 people followed by an occupation of the lawn outside the main building on the campus where tents and a marquee were set up.
